How does weak AI work?#
A Weak AI system operates within a pre-defined, limited context. It is trained on a large amount of data relevant only to its specific function—for example, an AI that identifies equipment defects is trained on thousands of images of both flawless and faulty parts.
Through this training, the system learns to recognise patterns and make decisions exclusively within that single domain. It cannot take its learning from one task (like identifying defects) and apply it to a different, unrelated one (like forecasting sales).
How is weak AI different from strong AI?#
Weak AI is a system that excels at a single, specialised job. In contrast, Strong AI (or Artificial General Intelligence) is a theoretical form of AI that would possess the consciousness and intellectual ability to understand, learn, and apply its intelligence to solve any problem, just like a human being. Virtually all AI in commercial use today is Weak AI.
