What does each lever do?#
Lever one removes people from paths where rules and evidence already settle the question, using context, validation, guardrails, deterministic checks and cheap rollback. Paying down system debt is lever-one work, and every gate it removes is a queue gone. Lever two makes the remaining human decisions clearer, faster to catch up on and better supported by evidence.
Why is lever two the one that gets neglected?#
Because lever one is visible. Removing a gate shows up as shorter cycle time this quarter. Improving the gates that remain shows up as incidents that never happen, which nobody celebrates.
Yet lever two is what makes lever one safe to push further. Every gate removed concentrates accountability on the gates left behind. If those are decided by someone clicking approve without real understanding, the organisation has removed the queue and kept the liability.
