How should a hybrid team be sized?#
By judgment load. The number of people should follow uncertainty, consequence and how often someone must step in. Work volume is what machines take on. A repetitive, low-risk area may need fewer people than before; a new product in a regulated market may need as many or more.
What does the load shift look like?#
Machine mistakes arrive at volume and review queues grow. Comprehension debt builds as understanding stops coming from doing the work, and cognitive load and burnout land on the people who stay accountable. When many agents contribute to a failure, blame can fall on whoever stood nearest, a moral crumple zone.
What structure might work?#
One structure worth testing adapts Team Topologies into five parts: mission teams, an agent and factory platform, autonomy enabling, a specialist judgment service and enterprise steering. Human-AI collaboration then needs new interaction modes: delegation, escalation and judgment as a service.
