What Is the Turing Test?

Written byre:cinq StaffUpdated 16 Sept 2026

The Turing test is a test to determine whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human. It addresses the fundamental challenge of measuring whether an AI system can communicate and reason in a genuinely human-like way, rather than just executing programmed commands.

How it helps#

It provides a conceptual benchmark for evaluating how convincingly an AI can interact, which is critical for assessing the quality of customer-facing systems like advanced chatbots or virtual assistants. An AI that can pass this test signals an ability to handle complex, nuanced conversations with customers or staff.

How it works#

The test involves a human judge who engages in separate, text-based conversations with both a human and a machine. The judge does not know which participant is the human and which is the machine. All communication is done via text to ensure the evaluation is based solely on conversational ability, not voice or appearance.

The judge's objective is to determine which of the two partners is the machine. If the judge cannot reliably tell the machine apart from the human, the machine is considered to have "passed" the test, demonstrating a human-level ability for natural language interaction.

How it is different#

The Turing test is a method for evaluating an AI's ability to convincingly mimic human conversation. Unlike typical business performance metrics that measure an AI's speed or accuracy on a specific task (like processing invoices), the Turing test measures the qualitative aspect of its performance—its ability to be perceived as human. It is less a measure of correct answers and more a measure of believable interaction.
