What happens to field expertise?#
It will gradually give way to expertise in directing machines, as the cobbler's craft gave way to factory production. That is a claim about direction rather than a timetable, and it is uncomfortable precisely because the craft being displaced is real and hard-won.
The strongest people will combine experience from before with excellence at directing machines. Knowing what good looks like is not replaced by the ability to ask for it; it is what makes the asking worth anything.
