What Is Emergent Behavior in AI?

Emergent behavior is the appearance of unexpected capabilities or characteristics that arise from the complex interactions within an AI system, which were not explicitly programmed into it. Large, complex systems can produce outcomes that are impossible to predict just by looking at their individual parts or simple rules. This unpredictability creates both powerful opportunities and significant risks that are difficult to plan for.

Understanding emergent behavior allows a business to spot and capitalize on surprising new uses for its AI tools. It also highlights the need for rigorous testing to manage the risk of the AI developing unintended or undesirable skills.

How it works#

Emergent behavior occurs in very large AI models, often called foundation models. These models consist of billions of simple, interconnected components and are trained on vast amounts of data. The goal of the training might be straightforward, like predicting the next word in a sentence.

However, due to the sheer scale of the network and the data, the system learns incredibly complex patterns and relationships. This allows it to develop sophisticated new skills that were not the original goal of its training. These new abilities, like performing math, writing computer code, or translating languages, "emerge" from the complexity itself.
