How it works#

A robot is comprised of three core components. First is the mechanical structure—the physical body, joints, and grippers that allow it to move and interact with objects. Second are sensors, such as cameras and pressure detectors, which act as the robot's "senses" to gather information about its surroundings.

The third component is the control system, which is essentially the robot's brain. This computer takes in data from the sensors and executes a pre-written program, sending precise instructions to the mechanical parts to perform the desired sequence of actions. More advanced robots may use Artificial Intelligence to interpret sensor data and adapt their actions to changing conditions.

How it is different#

Robotics is concerned with creating machines that perform physical tasks in the real world. While modern robots often use AI to make smarter decisions, AI itself is the software "brain" and can exist without a physical body—for example, analyzing data or powering a chatbot. Similarly, other forms of automation like software scripts operate purely in the digital world to automate computer-based tasks, whereas robotics automates actions in the physical world.
